The Attorneys General serve as the chief legal officers of the states, commonwealths, the District of Columbia and the territories. As such, their primary purpose is to serve the public by advising the Executive and Legislative branches of state government, covering a multitude of issues unique to their jurisdiction. Specific types of activities include representing the state and its agencies in all litigation involving state and federal courts.
This includes initiating lawsuits, defending the state, handling appeals, and serving as special criminal prosecutors. State Attorneys General also regularly advise the Governor, state agencies, and legislatures on the various legal requirements impacting their duties and responsibilities. Lastly, they work closely with their legislatures in proposing legislation related to issues such as consumer protection, antitrust, environmental protection, etc.
